High School Ministry

Hello from Choong Hyun / Charis High School Ministry! My name is Manuel Lim (Pastor Manny) and I currently oversee the High School Ministry Department. Our department covers the final four years of the student's high school life from 9nth grade to 12th grade. Knowing that the current overall trend of High School graduates is to leave their home church, our goal is to make sure that our students have a solid foundation in the Gospel, that they feel belonging and support in their home church, and that they are connected to a faith community as they move on.

The High School Ministry is a partner to the Jr. High Ministry (Pastor James Kook) and the Charis College Ministry (Pastor David Song), and under close supervision of the Education Pastor (Pastor Anthony Kim) and Education Committee, we work to ensure a smooth transition from each department and into the world as they mature in Christ.

1. The Gospel and Orange Curriculum

Matthew 22:36-39 ESV
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

We believe that the Gospel consists of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In addition, we also believe that the entire Bible (Old and New Testament) is useful to teach the Gospel. The application of this teaching should result in "Loving God and loving neighbor!"

The entire Education Department at CHMC is committed to Orange Curriculum for the teaching strategy and resources. Briefly, the curriculum is called "orange" because its vision is to combine the influence of the church (yellow light) and the influence of the home (red heart) to make a greater impact (orange) on the lives of children. Every curriculum has strengths and weaknesses, but Orange's strengths are in its ease of use, relevance, and strategy to reach the family.

2. My Home Church

We believe in cultivating a safe, fun, and welcoming community of faith so that students have a strong foundation and support system from which to launch into adulthood. Having been solidified in the Gospel, each student is invited to be Baptized or Confirmed (if Infant Baptized) at the age of 14. Students will then be expected to take full responsibility for their faith and be allowed to participate in Communion. Through Bible study, Friday Night Fellowship, events, serving opportunities, and summer missions among other things, students are encouraged to take ownership of their home church.?

One major strategy of Orange is to have as many faithful adults speaking into the life of a teenager. The Education Department is not only providing teaching, but also providing people to come alongside our next generation and discipling them to disciple others. Between the pastor, parents, extended family, and the church family, our high schoolers are literally surrounded and grounded. In particular, we emphasize the roles of our Volunteer Teachers who are committed for yearly to up to four years with the same student to cultivate a personal relationship. Please get know who they are!

3. My Next Church

"I graduated. Now what?" I work closely with the college ministry pastor to connect our local students. We have year-end joint events, attend graduations, and actively communicate with our graduates. Those who will be going far for college will have an ongoing communication channel with the college pastor to find a solid faith community near school and to have a community waiting for them at home during breaks.

Message to Parents

Please partner with us to point our students in the right direction. We need your prayers, your active support, and feedback to be effective! We will send a lesson overview called Parent Cue at the beginning of each sermon series. We ask our PTA to help us celebrate birthdays at the beginning of each month. We will provide college and career seminars as well as home visitations and counseling sessions if desired. I am here at your disposal. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Message to Students

God used young people (Joseph, Samuel, David, Miriam, Ruth, Mary, etc.) and God will also use you (1 Timothy 4:12)! God often uses the most obedient and not the most qualified! Our ministry will help you find out God's calling in your life and our staff and teachers will not only pray for you and love you, but we will also use all our resources and strength to train and equip you to live for God in High School, College, and beyond!

Some Questions

What version of the Bible do you use? We use the ESV (English Standard Version) and we ask that each student bring a hard-copy of the Bible to service and Bible study.

Is the Orange Curriculum Gospel-based and adequate for High School students? I have heard that one of Orange Curriculum's weaknesses is that it is virtue-based and lack an emphasis in the Gospel. The High School curriculum called XP3 in particular is topic based (2 to 5 week series) and helps students navigate these difficult years of family, school, and church. Any curriculum will be as Gospel-centered or not based on the way it is used by the department leaders. I personally enjoy Orange and recommend it to any church as a very effective resource.
